Zohar Bereshit — Folio 104a

Summary

The Zohar explains that Isaac is laughter, a joy that turns water into fire and fire into water, and that the Holy One, blessed be He, fixed his name Himself without leaving it to his mother to name him. Then, “The men rose from there and looked toward Sodom”: God sends to one He loves a gift, the poor person, so that he may gain merit; He draws upon him a thread of kindness that marks him, and the destroyer takes care around him. So Abraham gained merit and saved Lot: “God remembered Abraham.” The angels ate with their fire; they are three, fire, water and spirit, included in one another, and they were nourished from Abraham’s side. “They looked” expresses an awakening of mercy to save Lot. Abraham accompanied them, and God revealed Himself to him: “Shall I hide from Abraham?”
