זוהר בראשית — דף קסו ע”א

Summary

The Zohar explains that “Jacob sent messengers” after he was delivered from Laban, when the Divine Presence joined him and holy camps came. Rabbi Yitzhak interprets “the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him” as the Divine Presence, and cites David delivered from Achish, when he “feigned madness in their hands”; the Divine Presence rests in order to protect. On “Jacob was left alone,” it says that the camps parted from him, or went to sing; Rabbi Elazar adds that the night was the rule of Esau’s side, and that Jacob saw Abraham on the right and Isaac on the left. Rabbi Abba asks why Jacob sent to Esau, and Rabbi Shimon opens with “better to be lightly esteemed and have a servant,” about the evil impulse.
