זוהר בראשית — דף קט ע”א

Summary

The Zohar explains the verse “like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt”: Sodom and Egypt overflowed with delight, like the garden of the Lord, and did not need to be watered. Egypt’s punishment is therefore not the withholding of rain but the plague, since it has no need of rain. Sodom was destroyed because its people did not want others to enjoy its delights. Rabbi Ḥiya says they were wicked in their bodies and in their money: one who is stingy toward the poor has no life in the world to come. A passage of the secrets of the Torah, marked as a supplement from the omissions, describes seventy fiery colors, names of angels and the mystery of the seventy-two names, and explains that Sodom’s judgment came from heaven because they withheld charity. The verse “Lot went up from Zoar” and Rabbi Yitzhak’s opening, “He turns about by his devices,” begin.
