זוהר בראשית — דף קכא ע”א

Summary

The Zohar opens with the verse “The life of Sarah was a hundred years, twenty years and seven years,” and Rabbi Yosi cites Jonah: “They took Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.” He asks why the sea raged against Jonah rather than the earth, since he was fleeing so that the Divine Presence would not rest upon him. The answer is that the sea resembles the firmament, and the firmament the throne of glory; therefore the sea seized him. When they dipped his legs in the water the sea calmed, and when they lifted him it raged, until he said, “Take me up and cast me into the sea.” Once thrown in, his soul departed and rose to the King’s throne, where it was judged, and then returned to him; he entered the fish, which died and was later revived.
