זוהר בראשית — דף קלח ע”ב

Summary

The Zohar explains that every month a goat is offered, and on the Day of Atonement the goat, in order to draw it to its place and separate it from the moon; this is done with wisdom, as in “with the crooked You deal shrewdly.” According to the text, Israel acts wisely toward him so that he will not rule, and Jacob, the master of the house, must stand against the serpent so that it will not defile the Temple; Abraham and Isaac did not need this, since Esau had not yet come into the world. Israel was chosen as the Lord’s portion, “for the Lord’s portion is His people, Jacob.” “The boys grew up”: Abraham had educated them, but each went his own way, one toward the side of faith and the other toward the side of idolatry.
