זוהר בראשית — דף קמו ע”ב

Summary

The parable of the king who has mighty legions and sends only the smallest of them against a single bandit illuminates Jacob’s thought: against Esau these blessings suffice for now, and he keeps the others for the time when his sons will need them before all the kings. Then Israel’s kingdom will arise, the stone cut from the mountain, above every kingdom. Rabbi Ḥiya reads “the remnant of Jacob” as the blessings held in reserve. Rabbi Yesa comments on “A son honors his father”: Esau honored his father, and that honor prolonged his rule in this world; “a servant his master” refers to Eliezer. According to the text, Esau’s tears brought Israel into subjugation until it returns weeping. The passage finally opens with “Jacob left Beer-sheba” and “the sun rises.”
