זוהר בראשית — דף קמז ע”א

Summary

The Zohar comments on “Jacob left Beer-sheba and went to Haran” and “the sun rises and the sun sets”: the sun moves toward the south and the north, goes out from the east and heads west, while Jacob leaves the whole of the land of Israel for another domain. A bracketed passage says that Beer-sheba is the well whose light descends from the upper valley, and that “Haran” suggests “burning anger.” Rabbi Ḥiya explains that the west is the sun’s place and throne, toward which it yearns and where it gathers the lights. The Holy One, blessed be He, puts on tefillin and takes the upper crowns, and Rabbi Elazar adds that Beer-sheba is the Jubilee and the west is the Shemitah (sabbatical year).
