זוהר בראשית — דף קנב ע”א

Summary

The three flocks by the well are the south, the east and the north; the well is filled by them and waters the flocks, and a passage from the Tosefta adds that the well is called “Adonai.” “All the flocks were gathered there” refers to the streams that run to the sea; when they arrive, the south grows strong and the north cannot freeze the waters. The stone is then rolled away, meaning that the force of harsh judgment is removed. The stone returns to its place, because the world needs its judgment in order to rebuke the wicked. When Jacob and Moses sat by the well and saw the waters rise toward them, they knew that their wives would be brought to them there, Rachel and Tzipporah.
