זוהר בראשית — דף קנז ע”א

Summary

Leah brought Jacob in at the entrance, outside, so as not to be bold before Rachel; the Holy Spirit awoke in her, and she gave her sons names according to the secret of Ḥokhmah. Rabbi Ḥiya and Rabbi Yose travel along the road, studying Torah. Rabbi Ḥiya opens with the verses about matzah and the “bread of affliction”: the poor one is King David, matzah is a feminine without a masculine, and when it joins with the masculine it is called “mitzvah,” with the addition of a vav. On the way a voice warns of a band of murderers; they go up a mountain, where a man from the people of Arka asks the name of the land. The answer is “land,” because the land of life dwells there, as in “out of the earth comes bread.” Rabbi Ḥiya recalls that Israel received bread from the land of life and then from heaven, and that a person knows nothing until he tastes bread.
