זוהר בראשית — דף קנז ע”ב
Summary
Israel did not know the supernal things until they ate bread from above, the bread from heaven, and only then recognized that place. On the road, Rabbi Yose and Rabbi Ḥiya see two cattle, a male and a female; Rabbi Yose observes that everything, on land as in the sea, exists as male and female. He opens with “Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out”: Leah knew from the donkey’s braying, and Issachar was born of her, “a strong donkey”; she waited for Jacob so that he would enter her tent. Jacob knew the matter did not depend on the mandrakes but on what is above. Rabbi Ḥiya comments on “He settles the barren woman in her house”: Rachel and Leah, the lower world and the upper world. Rabbi Yehuda says the tribes are repairs below, in the image of what is above, and connects “I have hired you” with the body, that is, the Torah.
