זוהר בראשית — דף קסז ע”א

Summary

The Zohar relates a parable of a man who meets a robber and of the legionary who fears him, and applies it to Jacob, who said “I have sojourned with Laban,” and to Esau, who came out against him and grew proud when Jacob bowed. On “beware of speaking with Jacob,” it explains that Laban wished to destroy Jacob by his speech and his sorcery. According to the text, just as Laban practiced divination, so Balaam came with magical divination; neither succeeded against Jacob and Israel: Laban used ten kinds of sorcery and divination, yet “there is no divination in Jacob, nor magic in Israel.” Rabbi Yehuda adds that Balaam did not know the supernal holiness, which belongs to Israel, a “holy people.”
