זוהר בראשית — דף קעג ע”ב
Summary
From “Let us arise and go up to Bethel,” the Zohar teaches that one must thank the Holy One, blessed be He, for miracles and kindnesses; Jacob says “I will make” in the singular, because the troubles had passed over him alone. “He built an altar there” joins a lower rank to a higher one. “God appeared to him” refers to the seventy who are always with the Divine Presence, and “God went up from him” shows Jacob as a holy chariot. Rabbi Shimon cites “What great nation”: the Holy One, blessed be He, receives Israel’s prayers at every time. Rabbi Yose asks why Jacob is called “Jacob” again after “Israel”; the answer: the Lord is mercy and Elohim is judgment, and “Jacob” is used among enemies.
