זוהר בראשית — דף קעה ע”א

Summary

The Zohar adds that Rachel died because Jacob had delayed fulfilling his vow, and the accuser stirred up judgment at the moment of danger. When Esau came, Jacob placed Rachel and Joseph last, and Joseph shielded his mother from that wicked one’s eyes. Rabbi Yose cites “A curse without cause does not come”: a word that left a righteous person’s mouth, even unintended, is seized by the accuser, as in “With whomever you find your gods, he shall not live.” “As her soul was departing” teaches that her soul did not return to her body. Ben-Oni is the harshness of judgment, which Jacob bound to the right. Jacob set up a pillar; her grave will not be covered until the Divine Presence returns.
