זוהר בראשית — דף קפ ע”ב
Summary
The Zohar explains that the judgment striking the righteous stems from the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, who breaks the body so that the soul may prevail, whereas a person whose body is strong and soul weak receives his reward in this world. Questions arise: the Divine Presence does not dwell in a place of sadness, and some righteous people, even children of the righteous, were not broken. The answer is a secret: at times the moon is in deficiency and abides in judgment, and a person whose soul issues forth at that time will be afflicted all his days; only prayer annuls decrees. When the moon is in fullness and the flowing river makes use of it, the person is blessed with wealth, children and bodily wholeness. Thus children, life and sustenance depend on fortune, not on merit alone.
