זוהר בראשית — דף קפא ע”א
Summary
The righteous who are broken in this world are judged because of the soul that caused it, and the Holy One, blessed be He, spares them for the world to come. Rabbi Elazar says that everything is judgment, in order to purify the soul of the impurity it received here; it is written: “The Lord tests the righteous.” Rabbi Shimon opens with “Only he shall not come to the veil”: when the moon is blemished on the side of the evil serpent, the souls that issue forth are broken in pain, and they are renewed with the renewal of the moon, “from month to month.” Those who suffer with her are close to her, “the Lord is near to the brokenhearted,” and their sufferings are called sufferings of love. Finally, on “Behold, My servant shall prosper,” the text recalls that the moon diminished her light and shines by the power of the sun; after the Temple’s destruction the light darkened, and curses and pains prevail.
