זוהר בראשית — דף קצח ע”א
Summary
The Zohar explains “Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt” as pointing to the exile to come upon Jacob and his sons, and “go down” (redu) as the numerical value of the years in Egypt. Rabbi Yisa opens with “And now my head shall be lifted up”: when the Holy One, blessed be He, is pleased with a person, He raises him above his enemies, like David, and like Joseph before whom his brothers bowed down. Further readings follow: “now” as the supernal level, “my head lifted up” as the Assembly of Israel, as the good inclination over the evil one, as union with the patriarchs. Joseph the ruler is the sun that governs the moon, the river that overflows and nourishes all. Rabbi Elazar opens with “the iniquity of my heels surrounds me”: the days of evil are those of the evil inclination, which is given license to accuse those who defile their way.
