זוהר בראשית — דף רה ע”א
Summary
The story continues: when Rabbi Ḥiyya and Rabbi Yose turned to studying Torah, the man greeted them and explained his silence: having once greeted first a bandit who then harmed him, he had vowed to greet first only the righteous. He opens with “Truly God is good to Israel”: the Holy One, blessed be He, made right and left, good and evil, and man is included in both; according to the text, the idolatrous nations are assigned to the side of evil, while the good belongs to Israel, to the pure of heart, who cling to the secret of faith. Then Rabbi Elazar opens “Vayigash elav Yehuda” with “For You are our Father” and tells that before man was created the Torah said he would provoke anger, and the Holy One replied that He is slow to anger.
