זוהר שמות — דף מה ע”ב
Summary
This passage describes the supreme vengeance the Holy One executed in Egypt. Three types of death occurred that night: the firstborn who killed their enemies, the divine strike at midnight against the firstborns, and Pharaoh who rose to kill his own ministers. Like a dog biting its companion when struck, Pharaoh went out to the streets and accused his officers. The Torah calls them simply the people due to mixing with the erev rav. Rabbi Yitzhak and Rabbi Yehuda encountered a merchant who revealed himself as descended from a foreign woman and impure seed, a divine sign not to associate with him.
