This section deals with the status of a woman who has attached herself to another man after her divorce: by bonding to the other, she has received that side's portion, and her first husband will have no share in her forever. If the latter divorces her or dies, she is forbidden to her first husband but permitted to other men. A last husband who unites with her thereby bears the obligation to repair the double disorder created by her bonding to him. This is a deep secret of the parashah of Mishpatim touching on the laws of holiness and impurity.
