זוהר בראשית — דף עב ע”א
Summary
Rabbi Yehuda rises at midnight to study at an inn in the town of Mehasia and opens with the verse “and this stone, which I have set up as a pillar,” relating it to the foundation stone. A Jewish traveler objects that the stone existed before the world, and that Jacob was in Bethel while the stone was in Jerusalem. Rabbi Yehuda says that words of Torah require intention, and that at midnight the Holy One, blessed be He, delights with the righteous in the Garden of Eden. The traveler answers with the verse “As for me, in righteousness I shall behold Your face,” with David and the stone he took in hand before entering, and then with the prayers of the patriarchs: Abraham the morning prayer, Isaac the afternoon prayer, Jacob the evening prayer, for which Jacob praised himself regarding the stone.
