זוהר בראשית — דף קפח ע”ב
Summary
The Zohar recalls two women, Tamar and Ruth, whose husbands died and from whom the line of Judah was built, and from whom came David, Solomon and the Messiah king. Tamar strove with her father-in-law, Ruth with Boaz, and both did kindness with the dead, as in the verse “I praised the dead.” In the bracketed passage, the text deals with Tamar’s twins, with Perez, and with the sale of Joseph, in which Judah was a partner. “Joseph was brought down to Egypt”: the Holy One, blessed be He, consented to the act in order to fulfill the decree of the covenant between the pieces, and “Potiphar bought him” from the side of sin. The text then opens with “who commands the sun and it does not rise”: there are seven stars in the firmament, each firmament has attendants appointed to serve God, all of them praise Him, and at night three camps appointed over song separate.
