זוהר בראשית — דף קצד ע”ב

Summary

The Zohar explains that the magicians of Egypt are the sorcerers and its wise men the astrologers, and that they could not grasp the dream. Rabbi Yitzhak teaches that kings are shown supernal things, as in “God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.” The dream follows the interpretation, and Joseph restored the cupbearer to his post. Rabbi Abba opens with “The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him”: the righteous make peace above and below, and for one who engages in Torah at night a thread of grace is drawn out by day. Joseph was grieved in the pit; Pharaoh had him brought quickly and gladdened his heart. Rabbi Shimon teaches that Joseph was called righteous after he guarded the covenant. Rabbi Elazar opens with “Israel came into Egypt”: the Holy One, blessed be He, set events turning and brought Joseph down so as to raise him over the land.
