זוהר בראשית — דף רב ע”א

Summary

The Zohar teaches that one must stir the good inclination against the evil inclination and remind it of the day of death, and that nothing breaks the evil inclination except the Torah, for it dwells only where there is the joy of wine and arrogance, not with a broken spirit. The tribes were afraid in Joseph’s house because of their sin, and the Holy One, blessed be He, exacts payment for their sins across generations. So too with Hezekiah, who revealed hidden things to Babylon, as Isaiah told him; blessing rests only on what is hidden. The verse in Lamentations, “all who honored her despise her,” is applied to Babylon and to the letter sent by Merodach-baladan: he had placed Hezekiah’s peace before that of God, then reconsidered and corrected it.
