זוהר בראשית — דף רד ע”ב

Summary

The Zohar comments on “you shall be holy, for I am holy”: “I” refers to the Holy One, blessed be He, and “other” to the side of impurity; one who clings to the “I” has a share in this world and the next, while one who clings to the “other” is lost to the world to come, like Elisha, called Aḥer. During the famine year one should not appear in the marketplace. The text then explains “you shall cling to Him and swear by His name” according to the secret of the seven degrees. It is told that Rabbi Ḥiyya and Rabbi Yose saw a man wrapped in a prayer garment and carrying weapons. Rabbi Yose teaches that one should judge everyone favorably and that a traveler prepares for three things: a gift, a battle and a prayer. The man did not answer their greeting, and Rabbi Ḥiyya suspected him.
