When Jacob descended to Egypt, he went not only into exile but to strengthen Joseph. Wherever Israel is in exile, the Shekhinah is with them. The secret is that the Shekhinah descends with Israel into exile and rises with them in redemption. Jacob saw through the Holy Spirit that this exile was but a station on the way. The righteous do not descend into exile — they bring the Shekhinah down to illuminate the darkness.
