The rose that is red and turns white symbolizes how the Holy One governs His world. The attribute of Judgment is transformed into the attribute of Mercy like a sacrifice that rises from the altar fire. One who fasts offers his fat and blood, and the breath rising from his mouth is an altar of atonement. Prayer replaces sacrifice, provided the person directs his heart.
