Rabbi Yossi asked why the smiting of the firstborn occurred at midnight rather than by day, and why the weak ones behind the millstones died rather than kings and warriors. Rabbi Shimon opened with the verse 'All nations are as nothing before Him': their faith is void. In the beginning God created the heavens with the right and the earth with the left. At midnight the crown called Zot rules on both sides: mercy for Israel and judgment for the nations.
