Parashah Beshalah. Those who were not children of faith wandered and gathered (shatu), acting foolishly by troubling themselves, with a lesser result: its taste was like the taste of oil. The manna was a test of faith: children of faith gathered in holiness while the faithless labored in vain. Each person s manna quantity was determined by the count of souls in their household, which Moses used to adjudicate disputes. Each day the Holy One governs the world in two modes: in the evening Judgment awakens, and in the morning Lovingkindness awakens, which is why Isaac established the Mincha prayer at the hour of judgment.
