Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from before the Holy One, blessed be He, and the men knew that he was fleeing from before Him. A great storm fell upon the ship when Jonah was hidden in the depths of the vessel. The secret of the storm is the secret of Judgment that is aroused against the fleeing righteous. Jonah descended into the belly of the fish as the secret of the soul that descends into the depths and is purified. At the end of three days, the fish vomited Jonah onto dry land, an allusion to the tiqqun of the soul and its return to its source.
