זוהר שמות — דף קפט ע”א

Summary

Rabbi Hiyya teaches that everything depends on repentance, but Israel cannot awaken complete teshuvah until all the things written in the Torah are fulfilled. The exile is likened to a pregnancy reaching its ninth month — even if only one day of that month has passed, it is counted as if all nine months went by. Similarly, even if Israel tasted only a little of exile before repenting, it is reckoned as if they endured all the foretold tribulations. Rabbi Yossi laments that all paths to repentance seem closed to the people in exile. The Holy One blessed be He has compassion on Israel like a king who loves his only son, even when that son strayed and fell into bad company.
