זוהר ויקרא — דף י ע”א
Summary
The sages of the South learned from ancient books that the seven lands below are structured like the seven heavens above, each land separated from the next, inhabited by varied and strange creatures. The humans we know descend specifically from "Tevel," the highest of all the lands, where the throne of the Holy One, blessed be He, is said to rest; the other strange creatures arise from earth's vapors and last only a few years. Rabbi Nehorai Saba recounts being miraculously saved at the bottom of the sea, where he saw tiny creatures praying, and from then on wept whenever he heard words of Torah, out of awe for divine judgment. Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Abba teach that the firmament separating the upper and lower waters makes peace between them, and that the Holy One, blessed be He, is called Peace.
