זוהר בראשית — דף קפח ע”א
Summary
The verse “And so I saw the wicked buried” recalls that the ways of the Holy One, blessed be He, are truth and merit, and happy are the righteous. On “What he did was evil in the sight of the Lord,” Rabbi Ḥiya opens with “In the morning sow your seed”: messengers and appointed beings bear witness to people’s deeds. The sin of spilling seed in vain defiles more than others, in this world and the next, and one who commits it does not enter behind the curtain. “In the morning” means the days of youth, to bring forth sons and teach them the ways of God, like Abraham; “in the evening do not withhold your hand” applies even in old age, for “sons are the heritage of the Lord.” Tamar, a priest’s daughter, did not play the harlot: she acted wisely to perform kindness and truth, God assisted her and she conceived, for it was she, and no other woman, whom this act required.
