זוהר בראשית — דף קצט ע”א

Summary

The Zohar explains David’s words “the iniquity of my heels surrounds me” as the sin that a person tramples underfoot without concern, until it grows strong and leads him astray in this world and the next; it praises the righteous who watch over their deeds. On the verse “Joseph remembered the dreams,” Rabbi Ḥiyya opens with “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls” and teaches that man was created to labor in the Torah; whoever transgresses even one point of it is seized, as King Solomon was. The text asks why Joseph put his brothers through so many turns, and answers that he wished to bring Benjamin to him. Rabbi Yehuda then explains “then He saw it and counted it,” and Rabbi Yose opens with “Treasures of wickedness profit nothing”: these belong to those who do not labor in the Torah, whereas charity (tzedakah) is the Torah.
