זוהר בראשית — דף רח ע”ב
Summary
The Zohar explains “no one stood with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers”: “with him” refers to the Assembly of Israel and “his brothers” to the other chariots; on Shemini Atzeret the Holy One, blessed be He, unites with Israel alone, and, according to the text, when He raises the Assembly of Israel He will take vengeance on the nations. Rabbi Ḥizkiyah opens with “To You I lift up my eyes” and “I lift up my eyes to the mountains,” concerning the blessings drawn from above and awaited. Rabbi Yose opens with Elijah’s words, “Have You also brought evil upon the widow?” and compares them to Moses’s “why have You done evil to this people?”: permission was given to the Other Side. He explains that when a person clings to evil, God’s protection leaves him.
