זוהר ויקרא — דף מ ע”ב

Summary

That same young man opened with the verse "a king establishes the land through justice," explaining that the king is the Holy One, blessed be He, that "through justice" refers to Jacob, who is the synthesis of the patriarchs, and that "a man of offerings" refers to Esau, who demands offerings and tithes every day without doing anything himself, since the offering is a withdrawal of mercy that does not come through justice; this is why it is said, "a man of offerings shall destroy it." And although King David himself was, in a sense, "a man of offerings," this was through mercy, as in the verse "the faithful mercies of David."

All the days of King David, he strove for the offering to be bound to justice, so that they would unite as one. Solomon came and united them, and the moon stood in its perfection and the land in its stability; Zedekiah came and separated them, and the land remained without justice, the moon was impaired and the land was destroyed — then "a man of offerings shall destroy it" was fulfilled.

Oil is given to the priests and wine to the Levites, not because they need wine, but because from the preserved wine comes something to their side that unites everything as one and gladdens all the worlds, so that affection and the love of the faithful may be found among them. Whoever's will cleaves to this place where wine and oil are found is complete in this world and in the world to come, and clings neither to wealth nor to desire, as King Solomon proclaimed: "he who loves wine and oil shall not grow rich" — for another wealth, the supreme wealth, will come his way.

He opened again with the verse "the Torah and the commandment that I have written to teach them," explaining that "the Torah" is the Written Torah and "the commandment" is the Oral Torah, and that "to teach them" does not refer to Israel but to the Torah and the commandment themselves, whose shared source is that place of the preserved wine from which all the writing of the supreme book goes out, as it is said of it: "that I have written to teach them," "to teach them indeed." The Oral Torah is so called because it stands upon that same "mouth," which is the level of knowledge that sustains the Written Torah; and through this Moses rose above all the faithful prophets.

Finally the verse was cited, "remove the dross from silver and a vessel comes out for the smith; remove the wicked from before the king and his throne will be established through kindness," explained as follows: when the wicked multiply in the world, the throne of the Holy King is established through strict judgment, and when the wicked pass away from the world, the throne is established through kindness and not through judgment, since the world below depends on the world above. This is why, when the priest enters the Temple, he must enter with kindness, which is water, and not with wine, which is severity.
