זוהר בראשית — דף קלב ע”ב

Summary

The Zohar identifies three ranks in the verse: prayer, cry and tears; and then three others: “stranger,” “sojourner,” and “like all my fathers.” Seated prayer adorns the feminine rank as one adorns a bride, while standing prayer takes place before the supreme King; therefore one allots four cubits to one’s prayer and does not interrupt between redemption and prayer. One does not pray behind one’s teacher, since awe of the teacher is not awe of Heaven. Abraham instituted the morning prayer, Isaac the Minha prayer, the hour of severe judgment, and Jacob the evening prayer, which is optional. David, who names evening, morning and noon, prayed only two of them, “I will complain and moan,” and rose at midnight to sing.
