זוהר בראשית — דף קמד ע”ב
Summary
The Zohar reads “you have striven with God” as the union of the sun and the moon, and “he blessed him there” as acknowledgment of the blessings. Rabbi Shimon expounds “When the Lord favors a man’s ways, He makes even his enemies be at peace with him”: a person has two emissaries, the good inclination and the evil inclination; when he purifies himself, the good inclination prevails and the evil one becomes his servant. So too Jacob, who trusted in God, made peace with Samael, the power of Esau, after which Esau made peace with him. The text then explains “who then is he?”, and Rabbi Yehuda says that Jacob was punished for his father’s fright through the loss of Joseph, “where are they pasturing?”
