זוהר בראשית — דף קצה ע”א

Summary

The Zohar explains “The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free”: the king is the Holy One, blessed be He, and the redeeming angel who governs the lower beings is His emissary; “he had him brought quickly” means a thread of grace was drawn to give him favor before Pharaoh. Rabbi Abba explains that Pharaoh knew the name Elohim but not the name of the Lord, which was hard for him, as in “the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart.” The verse “Who is like the Lord our God, who is enthroned on high” teaches that when there are no righteous in the world He withdraws, and when there are, He watches over them; His name is revealed to Israel alone. Then Rabbi Yose and Rabbi Hiyya, on the road, examine “All things are wearisome”: the eye and the ear are not in a person’s control, and the mouth cannot speak everything.
