זוהר בראשית — דף קצז ע”א

Summary

The Zohar teaches that the earthly kingdom mirrors the kingdom of the firmament, and that the Divine Presence follows the righteous: Joseph therefore went down to Egypt first and took the wealth of the world, and afterwards the Divine Presence descended with the tribes. One who keeps the covenant is as one who fulfills the whole Torah. On “Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt,” Rabbi Hiyya opens with “The burden of the word of the Lord concerning Israel” and explains the word “burden,” used for the judgment of the nations as for that of Israel, as a load upon the Holy One, blessed be He. In “He forms the spirit of man within him,” souls emerge from the river and gather like an embryo in the womb, and the spirit spreads through the growing body, helped from above. When Joseph was lost, Jacob lost the additional spirit, and “the spirit of Jacob revived” marks its return.
