זוהר בראשית — דף רא ע”א
Summary
The Zohar goes on to explain “and he shall pass” in several ways: here, the sons of Jacob who left Joseph and Simeon behind, and the judgment that rests; it then distinguishes a harsh judgment from a lenient one, the latter drawing on the harsh when judgment falls on the nations. Rabbi Shimon explains that the soul leaving this world is judged and then crosses the river of fire, and that one who devotes himself to charity (tzedakah) passes without fear. The text then asks why this whole account of Joseph and his brothers is needed, and answers that every matter of the Torah holds secrets and paths for man. It opens with “Do not say, I will repay evil” and teaches that evil must not be repaid with evil, as Joseph did not repay his brothers with evil.
