זוהר ויקרא — דף טו ע”ב
Summary
When the sins of the world increase, the Holy Ancient One conceals Himself and the faces no longer gaze upon one another, so judgments awaken, as hinted in the verse 'until the thrones were cast down and the Ancient of Days sat' (Daniel 7) - the thrones being the upper crowns, the Patriarchs, who sustain and uphold the other worlds. From the side of the Mother come the guardians of the law, who grasp the rod of Severity and rule over mercy, leaving the worlds deficient. But when people rectify their deeds below, judgments are sweetened, mercy prevails, every crown returns to its place and all are blessed together - this is complete repentance, Yom Kippur, when fifty gates are opened. From this flow teachings on 'if he has sinned and become guilty' (the precise obligation to return what was stolen), on the four turning-points of the year when judgments awaken ('vayit'atzev'), on the mourning since the Temple's destruction (the Holy One having sworn not to enter the heavenly Jerusalem until Israel enters the earthly Jerusalem), and on the forbidden-nakedness verses as an allusion to the revealing and covering of the world's sins bound to the Mother (the Shechinah) - when she covers herself again and rejoices over her children, this is complete repentance.
