זוהר ויקרא — דף סב ע”א

Summary

Rabbi Elazar opened, saying: "And he looked, and behold a well in the field, etc., and there all the flocks were gathered, etc." This well is the one of which it is written: "A well which princes dug, which the nobles of the people delved," and the three flocks of sheep lying upon it are Victory, Foundation (Glory) and Foundation, which lie and stand upon it and fill it with blessings. From this well the upper and lower beings are nourished, and all are blessed as one, and the great stone upon the mouth of the well is that harsh judgment standing on the other side to hinder it. When the six crowns of the King gather together to pour forth blessings from the head of the King, then the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well and that harsh judgment is removed, and blessings are poured out to the upper and lower beings; afterward the judgment returns to its place, for it must perfume and rectify the world. Thus the Holy One, blessed be He, pours forth from the spring of the stream blessings upon the children of the generation, and of them it is written: "And all your children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children."<br />

Rabbi Shimon opened, saying: "The pious shall exult in glory, they shall sing upon their beds, etc." By thirteen measures is the bond of faith tied, that blessings be found for all, and by them the Torah and the holy Name are crowned. When Jacob wished to bless his sons by the name of the bond of faith, it is said: "All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this" — behold thirteen, for the Shechinah joined with them and the blessings were fulfilled, as it is written: "Each according to his blessing he blessed them," according to the blessing of each measure, after the pattern above. All these measures ascend, are crowned, and rest upon a single head, the head of the King called the supreme degree of piety, and the pious inherit all that honor from above: "The pious shall exult in glory" — in this world; "they shall sing upon their beds" — in the world to come; "the praises of God in their throat" — for they know how to properly tie the bond of faith, and then "a two-edged sword in their hand," the sword of the Holy One, blessed be He, blazing with two judgments, to execute vengeance upon the nations.<br />
<br />
And behold Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair, the crown of kindness and the supreme head, who therefore inherited that honor from above and tied a supreme bond, a holy bond, the bond of faith. Happy is his portion in this world and in the world to come; of the table it is said: "This is the table that is before the Lord." Rabbi Pinchas rose and kissed Rabbi Elazar and all the companions, and blessed them, took a cup and blessed it, then opened, saying: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, etc." All that day they sat rejoicing in words of Torah, and Rabbi Shimon's joy was great. Rabbi Pinchas took Rabbi Elazar and did not leave him all that day and night, rejoicing with him, and he read of him: "Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord," saying that in that world to come they would proclaim of him: "Happy is your portion, Rabbi Pinchas, for you have merited all this, peace be to you and peace to your helper, for your God has helped you." As they set out on the way, Rabbi Pinchas held on to Rabbi Elazar and would not let him go, accompanied Rabbi Shimon and all the companions and blessed them, and as they went, Rabbi Shimon said to the companions: "It is time to act for the Lord."
