זוהר בראשית — דף קנא ע”ב
Summary
The Zohar concludes the episode of Elijah and Rabbi Ḥiya: as long as the sages rejoice in the Torah, Samael cannot prevail over them, because “the voice is the voice of Jacob.” Rabbi Yissa cites “Unless the Lord guards the city”: the holy city stands upon those who labor in the Torah. On “and behold, a well in the field,” Rabbi Yehuda asks why David said “a psalm” when fleeing from Absalom: he rejoiced to see that the reckoning was being claimed from him in this world, and to see that greater figures had fled before him, Jacob and Moses alone, while warriors of the land fled with David. Jacob and Moses met the well, which rejoiced in them as a wife in her husband; David and Elijah did not. Finally, the three flocks lying by the well are the south, the east and the north.
